Want to enhance your brain health and mental well-being?
Dr. Daniel Amen, a neuropsychiatrist and brain imaging expert, has selected seven brain superfoods for their ability to support neural networks, optimize day-to-day brain functioning, enhance mood, sharpen mental focus, and more. He recommends putting these on your shopping list this year.
- Hemp seeds are a plant-based protein that are high in prebiotic fiber and an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids.
- Turmeric contains curcumin that has been shown to decrease the plaques in the brain thought to be responsible for Alzheimer’s disease. It is an anti-inflammatory and contains antioxidants. It also regulates blood sugar and has anti-cancer properties.
- Seaweed is a good source of selenium, tyrosine, and iodine to support healthy thyroid function. It is also high in fiber.
- Pea protein is a plant-based protein powder derived from yellow peas and provides all nine of the essential amino acids your body cannot produce. It is an ideal vegan substitute for animal proteins that support healthy neurotransmitter production.
- Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium, which supports thyroid function and the immune system. These nuts have an antidepressant-like effect.
- Sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids as well as choline, a compound that is neuroprotective and useful following head trauma.
- Gluten-free whole oats are full of nutrients, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. They have a high concentration of an amino acid that helps stabilize electrical activity in the brain, resulting in a feeling of calm and more self-control.
