Mindfulness for Substance Use Disorders

News Briefs
May 19, 2024

Negative mood is often a trigger for substance abuse. Experts believe mind and body approaches may decrease the impact of negative mood and can serve as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, along with behavioral modifications, therapy, or pharmaceuticals.

Mindfulness-based therapies have shown promise in reducing cravings and improving quality-of-life measures in people with substance use disorders. Research has shown a combination of mindfulness and conventional medicine can help smokers abstain from smoking.

Studies suggest that mind/body therapies such as acupuncture, hypnotherapy, and yoga may improve cravings and anxiety symptoms in those suffering from addictions, but more research is needed.

Those who are considering using a mind/body approach to treating substance abuse or addiction should make the decision in consultation with a healthcare provider.
