Mindfulness Found to Benefit Children with Autism and Their Parents

With an estimated 1 in 132 people globally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), researchers are working to find ways of improving the quality of life for them and their parents. Following a mindfulness-based program can help, according to studies.

Mindfulness merges the Western science of psychology with the Buddhist tradition of meditation. ASD symptoms, which may include anxiety and aggression, can be helped by mindfulness training, which focuses on an awareness of bodily sensations, feelings, thoughts, and senses to help practitioners pay attention to the present moment without judgment.

A 2017 study using a mindfulness-based program called MYmind explored the immediate and long-term benefits of the practice for those with autism and their parents. Forty-five children and adolescents with ASD participated. Researchers measured the effects of mindfulness on social communication problems, emotional and behavioral functioning, as well as mindful awareness. Parents reported that not only did their children’s symptoms improve, but they themselves experienced improved emotional functioning, increased mindful awareness, and demonstrated better parenting skills.

Since mindfulness encouraged the children to cultivate an awareness of the present moment, they had more meaningful communication and social interactions with others. They were also able to cope better in situations, and the need to pay excessive attention to detail was reduced. Scientists also found that training parents in mindfulness helped ease their stress, allowing them to react calmly to their autistic children.
