Combatting the Stress of Nursing
Called upon daily to show love and patience in the face of adversity, suffering, and pain, nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system. Day in and day out, they cope with a great deal of stressful work and then return home to manage their own families. This lifestyle can lead to a lack of time for self-care, resulting in burnout, which impacts immune function and leaves the caregiver vulnerable to illness. In response, the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) has developed strategies to help nurses maintain a sense of balance and take care of themselves.
According to AHNA, sleep is a priority to maintaining healthy immune function. Sleep deprivation prevents the immune system from creating and releasing cytokines, which are essential for fighting off infection. While 7-8 hours a night is ideal, the AHNA recommends sleeping as many consecutive hours as possible. Aromatherapy has many anti-viral, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory benefits. Using lavender on the soles of the feet, nape of the neck, and temples before bed has been found to promote a restful slumber.
Hydration is also essential. Since the physical response to stress mimics dehydration, it’s important for nurses to watch for signs of dehydration like darker urine, constipation, and lack of energy. AHNA recommends drinking two glasses of water when first awakening and 16-24 ounces before a 12-hour shift. Maintaining a nutritious diet is also important. A diet high in antioxidants decreases brain fog and vitamin deficiency.
Movement is an antidote to the impact of stress on cells, according to AHNA. Committing to 15 minutes outside to breathe and walk elevates mood. Taking breaks during work to stretch or practice yoga is healing and energizing. And since the mind has the ability to create endorphins, which have physiological and psychological benefits, self-affirmation is extremely beneficial. Meditation works to alleviate stress by reducing cortisol levels. Focusing on the breath and increasing mindfulness can reduce the stress of the external environment.
Taking time for self-care helps nurses stay happy and healthy so they can lead fulfilling lives as they pursue a selfless and demanding career.
