Massage Therapy for Multiple Conditions
One of the most multi-purpose treatments available is massage therapy. Effective for stress, muscle ache, and injury, it also provides benefits for heart disease and stomach problems. Studies have shown that massage is a viable treatment for constipation, insomnia related to menopause, cancer, and fibromyalgia, an illness that causes muscle and joint pain.
Massage is not a one-size-fits-all therapy; there are many different types available to suit various problems and individual tastes. Among the best known is the full-body Swedish massage for all-purpose relaxation of muscles and mind. A study out of Emory University concluded that Swedish massage is an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. The results of another study suggest that Swedish massage strengthens the immune system, enabling it to fight off viruses.
For more localized pain, a deep-tissue massage can release tightness and is recommended for injuries and chronic muscle pain. Similar to deep-tissue massage is the sports massage for muscle tightness and injury in dancers and athletes.
Sufferers of chronic pain may benefit from the trigger-point massage. The therapist will focus on a trigger point to increase blood flow to the area, helping to release the spasm. During a myofascial release massage, the therapist will knead the fascia, a web of connective tissue under the skin, to open up tightness. This type is especially useful for the neck, shoulders, and back.
Lymphatic massage uses gentle touch to encourage lymphatic fluid—which maintains fluid levels and removes the body’s waste products—to flow freely. It can be helpful for those with arthritis, constipation, as well as post-mastectomy patients. To alleviate swelling in the feet and legs, and for general relaxation, a prenatal massage maybe be helpful for mother and baby.
Many cancer patients are drawn to massage for relaxation and pain relief, and its efficacy has been widely researched. One study showed a significant reduction in fatigue. On pain mitigation, results vary, with some data showing a positive impact and others showing no improvement.
