"Grounding" for Improved Health and Well-Being

Walking barefoot through the park or on a sandy beach has more benefits for health and wellness than just taking in a beautiful day. Scientists have found that what is known as “grounding” or “Earthing”—touching the ground directly with one’s skin—may improve human health as electrons are able to enter the body. This improves bodily functions as electrons can act as antioxidants which neutralize free radicals toxins.

Just as electronics and appliances need to be grounded, so too do humans. But modern living keeps people separated from the ground, with shoes almost always worn outside. Many believe this disconnection from the Earth separates us from real connection with the natural world.

Although the full impact of electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) from electronic devices is not known, it’s believed that they can damage healthy cells. Some theorize that grounding is a natural means of protecting against potential negative health effects of EMFs.

Some holistic practitioners suggest practicing daily grounding to promote healing and a sense of balance. Pain reduction was a common result in several clinical trials on grounding. Backs ached less because the spine can be re-aligned by grounding, and muscles weren’t as sore or stiff. A small eight-week study of 12 men and women found that grounding helped provide better quality sleep. Stress reduction was another positive benefit, as levels of cortisol, a steroid that can kill brain cells, tended to return to normal once grounded. Cardiovascular health improved by lowering heart rate variability. Grounding also may boost the immune response and promotes wound healing.

Our ancestors harnessed the power of the natural world as they roamed the Earth long ago. Following their lead, by walking barefoot on dirt, grass, or sand, it may be possible to reconnect with nature and improve aspects of mental and physical health. If getting out into nature isn’t possible, there are products available that mimic grounding, including desk chairs, chair mats, mattress pads, and blankets.
