Irrational Fears and Worries? Epigenetics May Be to Blame

Article Abstracts
Mar 18, 2026

Many people experience irrational fears, worries, and anxiety that seem to exist for no apparent reason. Daniel Amen, MD, psychiatrist and neuroscientist, says these “ancestral dragons” may be caused by epigenetics.

Generational trauma is trauma that is written in the genetic code, inherited from parents or other ancestors. It may cause anxiety, panic attacks, unexplainable fears, feelings of guilt or shame, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research has shown that children and grandchildren of survivors of traumatic events such as the Holocaust and 9/11 are at greater risk for anxiety and PTSD.

Those who carry “ancestral dragons” may have symptoms triggered by unconscious reminders of stressful times stored in the genes. Dr. Amen offers strategies for breaking the cycle of trauma in his book Your Brain is Always Listening, which include talking to parents, grandparents, or the family historian to increase awareness of past traumas and to better understand the reasons behind unhealthy automatic reactions.

A recent paper in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests the COVID-19 pandemic will result in increased anxiety, depression, loneliness, and domestic violence, potentially creating trauma for future generations. Dr. Amen believes addressing past and present trauma is an important step for ensuring a more contented life and a better and stronger future generation.
