Complementary & Alternative
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is the encompassing term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard medical care. Complementary Medicine refers to therapies that are used in conjunction with the standard medical treatments but are not considered to be conventional in today’s mainstream care. This is slightly different to Alternative Medicine which refers to therapies used in place of standard medical treatments.
Conventional and Allopathic Health & Medicine
Conventional or Allopathic Health & Medicine refers to mainstream modern medicine. Allopathic Health is the health system in which medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals are licensed to practice and treat symptoms and diseases.
Energy Medicine & Healing
Energy Medicine & Healing, or Energy Therapy, is an emerging form of Complementary and Alternative Medicine treatment that uses energy to improve health. Energy therapies can include energies that are measurable, such as sound waves and light waves, as well as energies that are not measurable, such as “healing energy.”
Functional Medicine
Functional Medicine is a systems, biology-based model that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to achieve the highest expression of health by addressing underlying causes of disease. It addresses the unique expression of the individual’s whole health, not just the isolated set of symptoms. The Functional Medicine model relies on a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and then leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
Holistic Health
Holistic Health is an ancient approach to health that considers the whole person and how he or she interacts with his or her environment rather than focusing on illness or specific parts of the body. It emphasizes the interconnectivity of the mind, body, and spirit to achieve maximum well-being and optimal functioning. In Holistic Health, people accept responsibility for their own well-being and in turn make choices in their everyday lives that will affect their health outcomes.
Integrative Health & Medicine
Integrative Health & Medicine is a comprehensive approach to heath and well-being that emphasizes the importance of the relationship between practitioners and patients, making use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches and healthcare professionals to achieve optimal health and healing. It is driven by evidence and is focused on the multi-faceted, whole health of individuals.
Natural Health & Medicine
Natural Medicine, also known as naturopathy, is any healing practice that harnesses the power of nature to prevent and cure illness, including the human body’s innate defense and healing mechanisms. It is a form of Alternative Medicine that includes homeopathy, herbalism, acupuncture, diet and lifestyle counseling, and many others.
Personalized Lifestyle Medicine
Lifestyle Medicine recognizes that lifestyle plays a central role in many chronic conditions. Personalized Lifestyle Medicine utilizes the lifestyle changes (such as exercise, eating habits, stress management, tobacco and alcohol use) tailored to the individual to lower the risk for chronic disease. Likewise, if the disease is already present, it can serve as an adjunct to the management plan in place in order to improve the overall health outcome.
Spiritual Healing
Spiritual Healing is a Complementary Medicine therapy that involves healing both physical and emotional ailments through the transference of spiritual energy using either prayer or visualization and hands-on techniques. Spiritual Healing includes modalities such as Spiritual Healing Therapy (SHT), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Prayer, and Distant Healing.
Traditional World Medicine
Traditional World Medicine is founded on the beliefs, knowledge, skill, and practices of indigenous cultures, whether explicable or not. It is used in both the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement, or treatment of physical and mental illness.
Food As Medicine
Food As Medicine is based on the philosophy that the foods we regularly eat help determine whether or not we will become ill or remain healthy. The Food As Medicine model promotes eating a nutrient-rich diet for its strong medicinal and protective qualities. Many whole-food nutrients promote health and protect the body from disease, playing a critical role in controlling inflammation levels, balancing blood sugar, regulating cardiovascular health, and preventing chronic illnesses.
